A comparative study of East and West Berlin 1961–1989
PhD project
His doctoral research investigates urban life in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), with his primary focus being East Berlin between 1961 – 1989. Leveraging his experience as a professional urban planner, Lee is particularly interested in understanding how urban planners, bureaucrats, and political leaders in the GDR managed the spatial organization of cities within the framework of the planned economy, and how this spatial environment was experienced in ordinary life.
Lee Barich is PhD Candidate at the University of Waterloo, Canada. At the ZZF Potsdam he is continuing his research on his PhD project "A comparative study of East and West Berlin 1961–1989" in Department I: Communism and Society.
